Why Did This Frozen Food Reviewer Quit His YouTube Channel in the Middle of Filming?
What would make a popular YouTube personality quit his channel in the middle of a video?
Just two months ago, Gregory Ng, the “Frozen Food Master”, abruptly ended his video and abandoned his entire channel, “Freezerburns”, where he had been reviewing roughly 1000 microwaved frozen meals since 2008.
In the video, he pauses after putting a piece of Viking helmet shaped chicken nugget in his mouth from a $2 kids meal, disgustedly declares it’s not good, points out that it is basically breading with a “hint of chicken”, and says,
You know what? I can’t do this anymore. This is horrible. We should not be feeding our kids this. We should not be eating frozen food anymore. I’m done with this.
So what would make a successful YouTube personality quit a channel that had over 700 episodes, 1000 food reviews, and was getting up to 100,000 viewers per episode? Was this just some kind of planned stunt to get attention?
Turns out, Ng had been going through some personal changes in recent years, becoming an advocate for a healthy active lifestyle. He had even quit Freezerburns temporarily in 2012, claiming that recording videos for the channel was becoming his “daily downer”. He returned to the show shortly after, with ideas to make it better.
While he doesn’t believe all frozen food to be unhealthy, he believes the stereotypical frozen meal to be laden with sodium and fat, among other additives. He began to feel corrupted by the lure of fame and internet traffic, and over time began to question his motivations to keep the show going.
His plan originally was to keep the channel going through the end of the calendar year, but as you can see in the video, he got angry during this particular review, getting upset at the commercialization aspect of the meal and the fact that it was an unhealthy, cheap meal targeted at kids. That fueled his impulsive decision to just walk off right there and then.
So does this talented YouTuber have plans for a different video series in the future? He says yes, that he has already been working on another online video based project, one from his soul rather than solely from the careful strategizing of tapping a profitable niche.
However, Ng says, he is done eating things on camera.
