Researchers at the University of Southern California (USC) recently published new research in the journal, Cell Stem Cell that shows a surprising and effective way to do just that by using a completely natural intervention – prolonged fasting. Trials were done in both mice as well as in humans undergoing chemotherapy – a medical cancer fighting process that severely damages the cells that are responsible to provide your body immunity. The study showed that when subjects were put on prolonged fasting cycles, white blood cell counts were significantly lowered. In mice, it seemed like a switched was flipped, causing regenerative actions of stem cells that are responsible for the blood and immunity cell growth.
Valter Longo, coresponding author of the study, Edna M. Jones Professor of Gerontology and the Biological Sciences at the USC Davis School of Gerontology and director of the USC Longevity Institute, said,
When you starve, the system tries to save energy, and one of the things it can do to save energy is to recycle a lot of the immune cells that are not needed, especially those that may be damaged,” Longo said. “What we started noticing in both our human work and animal work is that the white blood cell count goes down with prolonged fasting. Then when you re-feed, the blood cells come back. So we started thinking, well, where does it come from?
The idea behind the concept is that fasting makes your body go into serious elimination mode – making you burn through not only your stores of glucose, fat and ketones, but also breaking down white blood cells quickly and efficiently. This draining of white blood cells induces stem cells to trigger the renewal of immune system cells. An enzyme called PKA is key here, as it has been identified as the main gene that – when shut down, wakes the stem cells up. Prolonged fasting reduces PKA.
This study has enormous potential, not only for chemotherapy patients who suffer from severe immune system damage, but also for the elderly, who have declining immune systems, and for disease healing in general. The research builds upon previously introduced ideas that fasting could be an answer for natural healing – from health pioneers in the alternative health field called “natural hygiene“, the founders of which include Herbert Shelton.

At least one study in humans has yielded promising results, however. In men with prostate cancer, those who drank pomegranate juice significantly lengthened the time it took for their PSA levels to double (from about 15 months to 54 months) Men whose PSA levels double in a short time are at an increased risk of death from prostate cancer, so the results suggest that pomegranate had a powerfully protective effect.
And the University of Maryland Medical Center stated something similar. “In test tubes, pomegranate extracts made from juice, rind, and oil slow down the reproduction of cancer cells and may hasten their death. Some extracts also help reduce blood supply to tumors, starving them and making them smaller. Most studies have focused on breast and prostate cancer cells. In one other study, pomegranate juice extract given to mice slowed down the growth of lung tumors.”

As erectile dysfunction is caused by low levels of NO (nitric oxide) production, pomegranate juice is believed to help give men more enjoyable, and longer lasting erections.
Pomegranate juice has been shown to help protect NO in the body. The theory is owing to that ability, men might be able to sustain longer lasting erections with the intake of pomegranate juice.
A study in 2007 noted, “Subjects were more likely to have improved [erectile dysfunction] scores when pomegranate juice was consumed … Although overall statistical significance was not achieved, this pilot study suggests the possibility that larger cohorts and longer treatment periods may achieve statistical significance.”

Even if you manage to consume a good amount of pomegranate, you can still harm your body with some of the other food you eat.
There’s one food you’re probably eating right now that does serious damage to your health.
You need to see what it is.
Over the course of human history, human beings have undergone physiological changes that have produced many new genetic expressions.
For instance the dark skin of blacks, and others, can be attributed to the increased production of melanin in people groups who live close to the equator.
Likewise it’s known that Nepalese sherpas have a greater lung capacity, as well as the increased ability to extract more oxygen out of the air than those who live at lower elevation.
And while these mutations generally serve a purpose (helping people adapt to their environment) there are some mutations that actually hurt your health.
One of those mutations is known as the MTHFR mutation.
MTHFR is a gene that regulates the methylation cycle.
The methylation cycle is in charge of many of the bodies fundamental processes.
For instance, vitamin B12 is ingested in the body and is then methylated into a final “end-form” that is used for energy, cognition, brain activity, and more.
When the MTHFR gene is mutated then the body is then unable to perform the process of converting vitamin b12 into its usable “end form.”
This can leads to some serious health deficiencies.
To get a basic explanation of the methylation cycle, Dr. Wiggy Saunders shows how the inability to methylate folic acid can have serious health consequences.
The MTHFR gene produces an enzyme which is known as MTHFR enzyme (what a coincidence).
Now this enzyme works with the folate class of vitamins. These are the same vitamins recommended for pregnant mothers as they’re incredibly necessary for the formation of children in the womb.
In a perfect world, MTHFR enzymes will works with folate and breaks down 5,10-methylenetetrahydrofolate to 5-methyltetrahydrofolate. When there’s a corruption in the MTHFR gene 5,10-methylenetetrahydrofolate does not get broken down.
This is a problem because your body needs for 5,10-methylenetetrahydrofolate to be broken down. That’s because 5-methyltetrahydrofolate is necessary to convert an amino acid called homocysteine into yet another essential amino acid called methionine.
Too much homocysteine in your body can cause some serious problems. In fact, it’s believed to be one of the biggest contributing factors to heart disease, as well as some other serious health conditions.
However, when homocysteine is broken down into methionine, the body is then free to make use of antioxidants, help to fashion amino acids into usable proteins, as well as working with the liver to process fats.
Ultimately methionine works to reduce inflammation, help relieve depression, and works to convert the hormone estradiol (E2), into estriol (E3).
Once in the liver, methionine undergoes another transformation and is turned into SAM-e (s-adenosylmethionine).
SAM-e being an end product of methionine is known to give the immune system a much needed boost, as well as being anti-inflammatory, and helps to break down serotonin, dopamine, and melatonin for higher brain function.
The way this gene mutation is passed on is through reproduction.
The parents pass down the mutation, and the child can inherit either a single copy, or double copies of two different MTHFR gene malfunctions.
Unfortunately there’s nothing that can be done to prevent passing down this relatively common genetic mutation.
MTHFR mutations can have some seriously negative health effects.
It can increase the risk of certain cancers (breast cancer and prostate cancer being the most common).
Likewise MTHFR mutations can lead to congenital defects, miscarriages, migraines, depression, irregularities of the heart, an increase in homocysteine (which can lead to cardiovascular disease) and more.
MTHFR mutations have even been known to produce Schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, Alzheimers, Parkinson’s and a variety of other disease affecting cognition.
The good news when it comes to MTHFR is you can supplement to reverse the ill effects of the genetic mutation.
What you read above covers just one of the aspects of MTHFR mutation.
Essentially what happens when the methylation cycle is what’s disrupted is many of the essential nutrients your body needs are never fully formed. Though your body received the right nutrients originally (a variety of common vitamins), it never got to break them down and turn them into their end forms.
Fortunately many of these end-form nutrients are available at health food stores and from integrative physicians.
With a simple DNA test, you can find out and if you suffer from an MTHFR mutation.
Keep in mind that even if you do manage to “fix” a MTHFR mutation, you can still harm your body based on the food you eat.
