Here’s Why Calcium Can’t Prevent Osteoporosis

15095821_sOne of the most common ailments Americans face is the risk of developing osteoporosis.

It’s far more common for women to develop this crippling maladay, but even men can succumb to it as they move on into their later years.

For years scientists advocated a steady intake of calcium to help increase bone density.  But what they’ve found is that consuming calcium, either through diet or supplementation, has no real effect on improving bone density.

This has left scientists puzzled, and even worse, it’s also led to the untimely death of hundreds of thousands.

What researchers have discovered is the increase in calcium intake has had an unintended, and deadly consequence.

What often happens is calcium will move into the arteries, taking up residence there instead of in bones. This in turn has led to an increase in arterial calcification and along with it a rise in the number of heart attacks from too much calcium.

So what gives?

Why is it that calcium supplementation hasn’t helped to increase bone density?

It’s simple.

People are deficient in the vitamin needed to help move calcium into the bones.

The vitamin in question is vitamin K2. And hardly any westerners have enough of it in their diet.

Why is this?

One has to do with a lack in dietary K2. K2 is typically found in pasture-raised animals and their byproducts (cheeses, eggs, etc). Because Americans have started to rely on more processed foods, and often times encounter food that’s part of the factory farming system, vitamin K2 exposure has decreased significantly.

Another problem is owing to an imbalance in gut bacteria.

Vitamin K2 is formed naturally in the body via bacterial absorption. Because so many people have unnatural gut flora levels, it means they also have a decreased level of K2 in the body.

So how does K2 work to help grow healthier bones?

As Kate Rheaume-Bleue explains in her book “The Calcium Paradox,”

Vitamin K2 works by activating a number of special proteins that move calcium around the body. Specifically, K2 activates a protein called osteocalcin, which attracts calcium into bones and teeth, where calcium is needed. K2 activates another protein called matrix gla protein (MGP), which sweeps calcium out of soft tissues like arteries and veins, where the mineral is unwanted and harmful.

When K2 is lacking, the proteins that depend on K2 remain inactive . The Calcium Paradox then gradually rears its ugly head with an insidious decline in bone mineral density and an even more treacherous hardening of the arteries. When K 2 is plentiful, bones remain strong and arteries remain clear.

Scientists have only recently uncovered this link.

The direction you should be headed then if you want to have stronger, healthier bones is to begin incorporating K2 into your diet.

While K2 can be derived from natural food sources, getting K2 from diet alone is an arduous and expensive task.

The World’s Most Important Antioxidant?

13583668_sIn the world of health and nutrition, the power of antioxidants cannot be underestimated.

Antioxidants have the power to stop a multitude of ailments, most notably, chronic fatigue syndrome, heart disease, chronic infections, cancer, autoimmune disease, diabetes, autism, kidney problems, Alzheimer’s disease, asthma, Parkinson’s disease, arthritis, liver disease and more.

In theory, all antioxidants are beneficial to your health.

But in reality, there’s one antioxidant that reigns supreme over all others.

It’s called glutathione.

Now the interesting thing about glutathione is the body makes it on its own. And though this is true, most people in the U.S. are woefully deficient in glutathione.

The reason being is over the years humans have been subjected to more and more environmental stresses. Things  like toxins, chemicals, radiation, etc. have put so much strain on the body it becomes unable  to produce, nor reuse glutathione to help regulate health.

Glutathione is unique as it can be recycled in the body. When there’s not enough glutathione being produced, then the body doesn’t have enough to recycle, and health defects begin to occur.

Dr. Mark Hyman describes Glutathione’s function in the following way:

Glutathione is critical for one simple reason: It recycles antioxidants. You see, dealing with free radicals is like handing off a hot potato. They get passed around from vitamin C to vitamin E to lipoic acid and then finally to glutathione which cools off the free radicals and recycles other antioxidants. After this happens, the body can “reduce” or regenerate another protective glutathione molecule and we are back in business.

However, problems occur when we are overwhelmed with too much oxidative stress or too many toxins. Then the glutathione becomes depleted and we can no longer protect ourselves against free radicals, infections, or cancer and we can’t get rid of toxins. This leads to further sickness and soon we are in the downward spiral of chronic illness.

The main cause of the reduced production of glutathione comes from a missing gene format known as GSTM1 function. Without this gene, the body won’t be able to recycle glutathione, and the health crisis emerges.

So what can be done about a GSTM1 gene malfunction and reduced glutathione?

A few simple fixes can help with waning glutathione levels.

1. You can eat foods with more sulfur. Sulfur is one of the primary components of glutathione’s makeup. Eating foods like onions, garlic, as well as cruciferous vegetables can help increase glutathione in the body easily.

2. Exercise. Moderate to intense exercise can also help with glutathione levels. This will help with detoxification in the body and boost immune defense which helps increase glutathione.

3. Take supplements. As glutathione helps to share the load with other antioxidants, the more antioxidants you bring into your body, the less strain on glutathione levels. Try to supplement with Alpha lipoic acid, N-Acetyl Cysteine, Selenium, Vitamin B-5 (P-5-P) Vitamin B-12 (methylcobalamin) Vitamin C, Vitamin E.

4. Try Milk Thistle. Milk thistle supports liver health which in turns help with detoxification which can help support glutathione levels.

One of the most important steps to take to boost glutathione levels is to work to promote immune health.

If you can keep your immune system healthy, it means you’re able to keep glutathione up, which spells increased health overall.

The British medical journal The Lancet, found the highest glutathione levels in healthy young people, lower levels in healthy elderly, lower still in sick elderly and the lowest of all in the hospitalized elderly.

Proof Human Beings Are Becoming Mutants

16526247_sOver the course of human history, human beings have undergone physiological changes that have produced many new genetic expressions.

For instance the dark skin of blacks, and others, can be attributed to the increased production of melanin in people groups who live close to the equator.

Likewise it’s known that Nepalese sherpas have a greater lung capacity, as well as the increased ability to extract more oxygen out of the air than those who live at lower elevation.

And while these mutations generally serve a purpose (helping people adapt to their environment) there are some mutations that actually hurt your health.

One of those mutations is known as the MTHFR mutation.

MTHFR is a gene that regulates the methylation cycle.

The methylation cycle is in charge of many of the bodies fundamental processes.

For instance, vitamin B12 is ingested in the body and is then methylated into a final “end-form” that is used for energy, cognition, brain activity, and more.

When the MTHFR gene is mutated then the body is then unable to perform the process of converting vitamin b12 into its usable “end form.”

This can leads to some serious health deficiencies.

To get a basic explanation of the methylation cycle, Dr. Wiggy Saunders shows how the inability to methylate folic acid can have serious health consequences.

He writes:

The MTHFR gene produces an enzyme which is known as MTHFR enzyme (what a coincidence).

Now this enzyme works with the folate class of vitamins. These are the same vitamins recommended for pregnant mothers as they’re incredibly necessary for the formation of children in the womb.

In a perfect world, MTHFR enzymes will works with folate and breaks down 5,10-methylenetetrahydrofolate to 5-methyltetrahydrofolate. When there’s a corruption in the MTHFR gene 5,10-methylenetetrahydrofolate does not get broken down.

This is a problem because your body needs for 5,10-methylenetetrahydrofolate to be broken down. That’s because 5-methyltetrahydrofolate is necessary to convert an amino acid called homocysteine into yet another essential amino acid called methionine.

Too much homocysteine in your body can cause some serious problems. In fact, it’s believed to be one of the biggest contributing factors to heart disease, as well as some other serious health conditions.

However, when homocysteine is broken down into methionine, the body is then free to make use of antioxidants, help to fashion amino acids into usable proteins, as well as working with the liver to process fats.

Ultimately methionine works to reduce inflammation, help relieve depression, and works to convert the hormone estradiol (E2), into estriol (E3).

Once in the liver, methionine undergoes another transformation and is turned into SAM-e (s-adenosylmethionine).

SAM-e being an end product of methionine is known to give the immune system a much needed boost, as well as being anti-inflammatory, and helps to break down serotonin, dopamine, and melatonin for higher brain function.


The way this gene mutation is passed on is through reproduction.

The parents pass down the mutation, and the child can inherit either a single copy, or double copies of two different MTHFR gene malfunctions.

Unfortunately there’s nothing that can be done to prevent passing down this relatively common genetic mutation.

MTHFR mutations can have some seriously negative health effects.

It can increase the risk of certain cancers (breast cancer and prostate cancer being the most common).

Likewise MTHFR mutations can lead to congenital defects, miscarriages, migraines, depression, irregularities of the heart, an increase in homocysteine (which can lead to cardiovascular disease) and more.

MTHFR mutations have even been known to produce Schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, Alzheimers, Parkinson’s and a variety of other disease affecting cognition.

The good news when it comes to MTHFR is you can supplement to reverse the ill effects of the genetic mutation.

What you read above covers just one of the aspects of MTHFR mutation.

Essentially what happens when the methylation cycle is what’s disrupted is many of the essential nutrients your body needs are never fully formed. Though your body received the right nutrients originally (a variety of common vitamins), it never got to break them down and turn them into their end forms.

Fortunately many of these end-form nutrients are available at health food stores and from integrative physicians.

With a simple DNA test, you can find out and if you suffer from an MTHFR mutation.

Keep in mind that even if you do manage to “fix” a MTHFR mutation, you can still harm your body based on the food you eat.

1 Thing You Do Every Day that Causes Heart Disease – Can You Guess What It Is?

‘We have known for 60 years that physical activity is important for the heart,’ said lead author Elin Ekblom-Bak… But until recently the research has mainly focused on exercise and has “forgotten” about the background activity that we do during daily life…

Whether someone exercises vigorously or not, it still usually only takes up a small fraction of the day. That leaves the rest of the time for either sitting still or engaging in non-exercise activities, like home repairs, lawn care and gardening, car maintenance, hunting or fishing.”

This means that if you spend mot of your time in a chair, then you’re at a higher risk of certain kind of health conditions, one of those being cardiovascular disease.

The reason this happens is because when you sit down, the motion of blood flowing through the body is greatly restricted.

This means that the muscles in your heart aren’t activated, and your heart doesn’t operate nearly at the top of its ability… essentially creating a weaker heart.

That’s why exercise to make up for your time sitting doesn’t always work.

Dr. Mercola writes:

‘The key to lifelong health is more than just traditional gym exercise, three to five times a week. The answer is to rediscover a lifestyle of constant, natural low-intensity non-exercise movement that uses the gravity vector throughout the day.’

For those who work in a typical office environment this prognosis might seem bleak. After all, how can you manage to do your job if you can’t sit?

Also consider standing up every 15 minutes, go for a walk if you can, and consider opting for a stand up desk.

And while you’re at it, it always helps to have a heart healthy diet in place.
